L. Hollingsworth Wood was a Quaker attorney, born at Mt. Kisco, N.Y., the son of James and Emily (Hollingsworth) Wood. His sister was Carolena Wood (1871-1936). Henry Smith Leiper was an American clergyman and author. Born in New Jersey, he was educated at Amherst, and later Columbia University and the Union Theological Seminary. He spent four years as a missionary in China, and upon his return to the United States became active in various national and international organizations. Lee De Forest was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on August 26, 1873. He was a graduate of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in 1896 and received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1899. He was an important contributor in the development of wireless telegraphy in the United States. He started multiple radio broadcasting companies and patented 300 inventions in his lifetime.
